Responsible ownership

Weimaraner health.

Good breeders and owners learn the breed’s health risks, use appropriate screening, and build a relationship with a trusted veterinarian.

Health awareness

Weimaraners are generally athletic dogs, but no breed is free from health concerns. DVWC’s longstanding health guidance calls particular attention to gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat), hip dysplasia, and inherited or immune-related conditions that may occur in the breed.

Bloat and emergency planning

Bloat can become a life-threatening emergency. Owners should learn possible warning signs, know the location and phone number of an emergency veterinary hospital, and seek professional care immediately when bloat is suspected.

Screening and preventive care

Prospective puppy buyers should ask breeders about health screening performed on both parents and request documentation. Owners should discuss nutrition, growth, orthopedic health, vaccination, parasite prevention, and exercise with their veterinarian based on the individual dog’s age and needs.
