Start with the breeder, not the advertisement
Responsible breeders plan litters carefully, screen breeding dogs, raise puppies with close attention, ask prospective owners questions, provide written agreements, and remain a resource throughout the dog’s life. Availability may require patience.
Ask good questions
- What health testing was completed on both parents, and can you see the results?
- What are the parents’ temperaments, ages, accomplishments, and health histories?
- How are the puppies raised, socialized, evaluated, and matched with homes?
- What support and return provisions are included in the contract?
Be cautious
Be wary of sellers who always have puppies available, will not show health records, avoid questions, offer no continuing support, or are primarily focused on a quick sale. Never send money until you have verified the breeder and understood the agreement.
